SICSSO Annual Congress - The International Society of Cornea, Stem Cells and Ocular Surface.
"The association was founded 21 years ago with the aim of spreading lamellar transplantation techniques around the world. There are over 10 million people suffering from corneal disease blindness that could be cured. Over the years, the association has conducted numerous humanitarian missions to third world countries. In the early 2000s, on an annual basis, we operated several times in Bolivia and Ecuador. Hundreds of patients have been treated during these missions.
Since 2018, the association, with a new project called Cornea Transplant Foundation, has undertaken a new series of "tutoring" missions with the appointment of an international board. Given the large number of patients suffering from corneal pathologies, it was decided to change the approach and, instead of "limiting" oneself to performing transplants during the mission period, it was decided to focus on on-site staff training. In our opinion, training ophthalmologists in the diagnosis, treatment and cure of corneal pathologies represents the only way to overcome the lack of care. The missions to date have been carried out in Georgia, in Italy in Novara and in Turkey.
Sharing the latest innovations in the ocular surface and cornea are the pillar of the association.
This year SICSSO will celebrate the twentieth edition of its annual congress in Florence at the Palazzo dei Congressi from 30 June to 2 July. More than 70 international speakers are expected, among the most authoritative and with the highest scientific impact in the sector. "
