Congresses

Florence, March 27th, 2025 – A window into the world of transplants and cellular therapies, offering an overview of new treatments and the latest therapies for cancer, neurological disorders and immune system diseases. For three days, Florence will become the global center of hematology, hosting the 51st Annual Meeting of the EBMT (European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation) from March 30th to April 2nd at Fortezza da Basso. This event is the most important gathering for research and training in the field of bone marrow transplantation in Europe and will bring to the Tuscan capital over 5,000 professionals, including scientists, doctors, nurses and technicians from around the world, with an estimated economic impact of 9 million euros on the local area. Florence’s bid was secured thanks to the collaborative efforts of Destination Florence Foundation, together with Firenze Fiera, with the support of Careggi University Hospital and Florentine ambassador doctor Riccardo Saccardi, who took on the role of Chair for the Congress once again, considering that he held the same position for the first Florentine edition in 2008, which set record numbers.

The event is the most important annual gathering for research and training in the field of cellular therapy in Europe and will provide a unique opportunity for discussion and exchange on the results related to stem cell transplants.

“Being able to host this congress in Florence is the result of the harmonious work of a team of partners such as Destination Florence, Firenze Fiera and a medical-scientific group from Careggi Hospital, all working with clear goals and dynamics. Through events like this, Florence further strengthens its role as an international intersection for cultural exchange and as a key destination for advanced knowledge.” – explains Laura Masi, President of Destination Florence Foundation. “The positive impact on the local area is also significant. Congress tourism is a crucial asset for the city, a type of tourism that respects Florence’s unique characteristics while also generating a high daily spending average”.

“Seventeen years after the first EBMT congress held in Florence at Fortezza da Basso, our facilities are once again ready to host, from March 30th to April 2nd, the most important international event in the world of transplants and cellular therapies, with over 5,000 delegates from across Europe,” adds Lorenzo Becattini, President of Firenze Fiera. “This is another significant victory for Florence’s meeting industry, the result of the joint candidacy of Firenze Fiera the Destination Florence Foundation, which once again rewards the city of Florence and our offering of exclusive spaces and cutting-edge technological services”.

“EBMT is glad to return to Italy for the first time in a decade since our last annual meeting in Milan,” adds Anna Sureda, EBMT President and Co-President of the Congress. “Italy has a strong and active presence within the EBMT community, ranking second among the top ten countries in terms of transplant centers participating in EBMT, with 90 centers involved. We are excited to gather in Florence, a city renowned for its rich history and scientific heritage, to collaborate and drive progress in our field”.

“Hosting the 51st Annual Meeting of the EBMT in Florence is a fantastic opportunity to highlight the contributions of the members of our Italian center,” emphasizes Fabio Ciceri, Chair of the EBMT Scientific Council and Co-President of the Congress. “I look forward to welcoming over 5,000 participants as they connect, exchange knowledge and showcase the latest scientific advancements in transplantation and cellular therapy”.

The 51st Annual Meeting of the EBMT represents the fourth congress of the current year held in Florence, thanks to the joint efforts of Destination Florence Foundation and Firenze Fiera. This follows the European Congress of Internal Medicine (ECIM), the congress ESC Acute CardioVascular Care (ACVC) and the international astrophysics congress, which collectively attracted over 7,200 congress members, generating an economic impact of 13 million euros on the local area.
